The pharmaceutical and medical device business Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK) has built a biopharmaceutical production plant in Watertown, Massachusetts. The state-of-the-art 350,000 square foot facility, which resembles a greenhouse, has the potential to manufacture millions of biologics, vaccines, and other complex things. The plant has the ability to generate 75 million doses of medications and immunisations yearly and provides services to a large network of hospitals and other healthcare organisations. Following its $1.3 billion acquisition of the pharmaceutical and medical device business Chiron Corporation last year, Merck now has a $7.8 billion capacity to produce biopharmaceuticals on its books. Germany has the majority of the capacity. The production footprint, however, has increased.
